I was in Lisbon, Portugal in May for a short yet productive stay. I honestly don’t know or have the words to describe this city. Nothing I say could ever capture Lisbon correctly. It’s indescribable. Lisbon just is. It’s an essence. A vibe. An aura. A living, breathing place that embodies an authentic spiritI fell in love with Lisbon and I was struck by the friendliness of the people, the affordable food.

HISTORY

Lisbon’s history is lengthy and complex.

Lisbon is the westernmost capital city in continental Europe. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries.

From Lisbon Guide: Early history of Lisbon was a battlefield for Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians, however it was Romans who started their two-century reign in Lisbon in 205 BC. During Romans period, Lisbon became one of the most significant cities in Iberian Peninsula and renamed Felicitas Julia. In 714, the Moors arrived to peninsula and resisted against Christian attacks for 400 years. When the Christians finally recaptured the city, it took one more century to repel all the Moors from the peninsula. The 15th century was the point of departure for the Portuguese Discoveries, an era during which Portugal enjoyed abundant wealth and prosperity through its newly discovered off shore colonies in Atlantic islands, the shores of Africa, the Americas and Asia. Vasco da Gama’s famous discovery of the sea route to India marked this century. Lisbon was then world’s most prosperous trading centre. However, this era didn’t take long: the earthquake of 1755 destroyed nearly entire city. The city was rebuilt by the Marquês de Pombal, who thus created the Baixa Pombalina, a commercial area that still attains attraction. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city spread progressively to the North and areas such as the Avenidas Novas (New Avenues) were added.Today, Lisbon is one of the most beautiful capitals of Europe while still maintaining the marks of its early glorious history.

BEFORE TRAVELING TO LISBON

Visa:Nationals of Australia, Canada and the USA can stay for up to 90 days without a visa (USA citizens must have at least six month validity on their passports).

Language: The official language is Portuguese, and while there may be similarities to Spanish, they are two languages of their own. So before you go off and say gracias, keep in mind that it may offend people and the word for “thank you” in Portuguese is obrigado, or obrigada if you’re a girl.

Pack Comfortable Shoes: When packing for your trip to Lisbon, you’ll want a pair of good walking shoes because this town is hilly! Lisbon is built on seven hills. That means a lot of work for your calf muscles, but also some beautiful views to make up for it!

The Lisboa Card will help you save a lot of money. Public transportation, lots of tourist attractions are included in the price as well. Lisbon may be a small city, but not all sights are close to each other

Elevador de Santa Justa

Tram28,SunnyInEveryCountry,Portugal,Lisbon,Lisboa,Europe,Travel,TravelTips,TravelGuide

Elevador de Santa Justa  also known as Santa Justa Lift it’s an vertical elevator, the only one back in 1902 because otherwise there was only funiculars. Initially created so Lisbonians would be able to get from Baia’s district to Chiado’s easily, it is now one of the unavoidable sites for tourists. Indeed, it’s Neo-gothic architecture and the view on it’s top make it a remarkable place. The view was breath-taking and even photos couldn’t do it justice, you have to actually see it to understand it.

Castelo De S. Jorge

CasteloDeS.Jorge,Tram28,SunnyInEveryCountry,Portugal,Lisbon,Lisboa,Europe,Travel,TravelTips,TravelGuide

From Visit Portugal:The Castelo de São Jorge is one of Lisbon’s most distinctive monuments, being situated on the city’s highest hill. The oldest known fortification at this spot dates from the 2nd century BC, although some of the remains found here date from as far back as the 6th century BC. Archaeological evidence has also made it possible to discover traces of the presence of Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans and Muslims, confirming the human occupation of this area since very remote times. The castle itself was founded in the 10th and 11th centuries, when Lisbon was an important Moorish port.
Inside the walls, you will find a museum, where you can see a presentation of the history of Lisbon, and the Torre de Ulisses (the Tower of Ulysses). The city’s legendary founder has given his name to the former Torre do Tombo, which now houses a camera obscura with a giant periscope that allows you to enjoy a 360º panoramic view of the city in real time.

Lisbon is more than just a string of museums, iconic bridges, city plazas, scenic river walks, and architectural wonders. Lisbon is an experience in and of itself. One that shouldn’t be contained in a neat and tidy box of itineraries and sights to be crossed off a list.
